Indonesia, Borneo, Central Kalimantan, Dayak peoples, ca. early 20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden (probably ironwood) bowl, made to hold ink for tattooing. Its handles are two finials ornately carved from deer horn, giving the bowl the appearance of being a dragon resting its belly against the table while raising its head and tail. Tattoos were an important marker of social status and accumulated experience in Dayak society, and the tools used to make them are works of art in and of themselves!
