East Asia, China, ca. 19th century CE. A hand-carved wooden festival mask of a sizable form with a hollow verso ready for wear. The expressive face on the front features bulging hemispherical eyes, a broad nose with delineated nostrils, rounded cheeks, a curled upper lip with an exposed top row of teeth, and a circular medallion protruding from the center of the forehead. The back of the mask has a thick wooden rod through the temples so the performer can hold and maneuver the mask, and a pair of pierced holes on the forehead allow for the attachment of a larger costume.
