East Asia, China, ca. 19th to 20th century. A beautiful scroll painting by the artist Xu Hong, the figurative panel hand-painted on silk and with a signature/inscription at the upper right and another inscription on the verso. The scene features two women looking over the balcony of a palace or temple, with lovely foliage delineated in the surroundings, two people rowing a boat in the waters beyond, and a bridge across the water to connect lands with lush foliage in the distance. Above and below the painting is a decorative silk border with elaborate flourishes in soft blue and rose hues. All is set on a tone on tone creamy white fabric with stylized birds and lotus flower motifs. This larger panel has a gold-hued border.
