Pre-Columbian, Maya Territories, Early Classic Period, ca 300 to 400 CE. A hand-built terracotta vessel depicting an adorable, slightly anthropomorphized rendition of a baby kinkajou, a small arboreal nocturnal mammal from the Procyonidae family admired by many indigenous peoples of the Pre-Columbian world, inhabiting from east and south of the Sierra Madres in Mexico throughout Central America to Bolivia east of the Andes and the Atlantic Forest of southeast Brazil. Kinkajous also represent the personification of Venus in the Mirana tradition. A wonderful example depicting an undeniably endearing and expressive creature with wide eyes and broad bat-like ears, large creamy white ovoid eyes incised down their centers, a protruding full nose, applied smiling lips, and stylized limbs.
