Pre-Columbian, north coast of Peru, Chavin, ca. 12th to 5th century BCE. A fascinating ceramic vessel, conical with a wide, flared mouth. Projecting from one side is the face of a shaman, anthropomorphic with different facial features on the left and right. The face is in high relief, with projecting features, including a snub nose, large ears, and expressive eyes. One side of the face appears to represent a young person, while the other, with the bags around the eye, suggest an older person. The body of the vessel is burnished grey, with a pale beige color on the face; red cinnabar pigment colors the lower profile areas of the face. The artwork of Chavin represents the first widespread style in the Andes.
