Pre-Columbian, northern to central Peru, Chimu-Inca culture, ca. 1200 to 1500 CE. A highly burnished blackware pottery vessel with a slightly rounded but stable base, a tapered conical body with a backswept shoulder, a semicircular strap handle, and a slender spout projecting from the top. The front of the vessel depicts the stylized visage of a warrior with a stern gaze, slender nose, thin lips flanked by shallow nasolabial folds, and petite ears adorned with massive earspools, all beneath a low-brimmed helmet with a chin strap. A fine example of Chimu-Inca portraiture!
