Pre-Columbian, Peru, Nazca, ca. 500 BCE. Outstanding textile panel woven primarily of camelid (llama) fibers along with native cotton, in vibrant shades of red, gold, tan, green, blue and deep browns. The entire length of the sash is comprised of abstract flying shamans and llama heads in profile. It is nearly impossible to understand the meaning behind such a fantastical scene - perhaps created under the influence of strong psychedelic drugs. The concept of flying shamans is quite fascinating when taken into context of the Nazca lines, viewable only from a high altitude. Mounted to black cotton backing and ready to frame. Size: 53" L x 4" W (134.6 cm x 10.2 cm)Textile such as this can only survive due to the absolutely dry conditions found in southern Peru. In areas of this region, rainfall has never been recorded since the Spanish first ventured here in the early 16th century.
