Extremely Rare Huari Polychrome Vessel - Janus Heads

Pre-Columbian, Central Coast Peru, Huari, Lima-Niviera, ca. 1000 CE. An extremely rare, impressively large, and finely modeled and painted janiform vessel with two visages looking out from opposite sides of the lower neck, a tubular spout emerging above the heads with twin handles joining the figures' heads to the spout, and finally an ample piriform body that is elaborately decorated with an abstract textile design depicting stylized birds and serpents. Interestingly, the heads are identical save the colors of their complexions. All is painted in a polychrome palette of red, black, white, and tan. A wonderful example of extremely rare Lima Niviera pottery as Lima, the capital of Peru, is built upon the pyramids and ancient sites of this culture.
