Pre-Columbian, Argentina, Catamarca region, Belen culture, ca. 1200 to 1476 CE. A hand-built earthenware jar of a sizable form with a narrow, concave base, a carinated midsection with a pair of ring handles, a sloped shoulder with a pair of protruding nodules, and a flared rim surrounding the deep interior basin. The iron-oxide-hued vessel bears ample black-painted decorations including groups of vertical lines inside the rim, zigzagging columns leading towards the base, and cresting wave-form motifs around the shoulder.
