South Pacific, Hawaiian Islands, ca. early 20th century CE. A lovely calabash bowl of a deep form, hand-carved from finely grained milo wood. The vessel sits upon a lightly rounded but stable base and has tapered walls, a thick rim, and a sloped basin. Prior to the 19th century, they were most commonly made from kou, milo, and kamani woods using stone and coral tools. Size: 5.4" W x 3.375" H (13.7 cm x 8.6 cm).
