European, possibly Spain, ca. 19th century CE. A handsome wooden chest or casket, extensively carved with a wonderful figural program of bas relief scenes that are also beautifully painted in a rich color scheme of teal, azure blue, pink, green, red, brown, and white. The two end faces of the chest feature seated figures - a crowned king seated and holding a gospel (perhaps a royal or Christ the King) on one side and a seated saint or clergyman in a blue robe holding a holy book on the opposite side. On one of the longer sides is a couple looking out from the balustrade of a bridge, and opposite to this side is a scene depicting three men building a brick edifice - perhaps a support for the bridge depicted on the other side. The iron handle, hinges, and latch are also attractive, their hand-smithed quality adds to the charm of the piece. A wonderful piece created in a folk art style with medieval influences.
