Japan, Asakusa, mid to late 19th century
A beautiful choice piece of walrus tusk ivory carved into a luscious ryusa manju depicting leafy stalks of bamboo, a thatched hut and many clouds. The center is inlaid with a silver-gilt figure depicting the poet Rihaku (in China, Li Bai) next to a huge double gourd filled with sake (the drink of the immortals). Central himotoshi in the back.

Condition: Very good condition, the facial features on the inlay slightly worn.
