A RARE SINO-TIBETAN ‘108 BUDDHA AMITAYUS’ MANUSCRIPT COVER, 17TH-18TH CENTURY
Sino-Tibetan, 17th - earlier 18th century. The gilt and red-lacquered wood manuscript cover carved in relief, showing Buddha Amitayus seated on a lotus throne, flanked by two standing consort figures and surrounded by 107 neatly carved smaller Buddhas, the back with leaf tendrils in relief.
Condition: Fine, honey-brown patina. Natural age cracks, some wear and abrasions especially near the border and to the original gilding. Minor dents and several losses.
Provenance: German private collection, by repute formerly in the possession of Heinrich Harrer and acquired between 1960 and 1990.
