A BRONZE OF A WATER BUFFALO AND A SCHOLAR, MING
China, 1368-1644. The bronze composed of two connected but removable pieces, one a water buffalo and the other a smiling scholar seated atop the buffalo and holding a hexagonal plaque with trigrams and a yin-yang symbol in his right hand.
Condition: Fine, dark patina with extensive old wear and traces of use. Overall very good condition, especially when considering the age of this bronze. Some casting flaws.
Provenance: A Hong Kong private collection, acquired from Nicholas Pitcher, London, 3rd June 2008.
