Important painting,The Artists Studio, by Armand (Francois-Chistophe)Toussaint(French 19th/20th century). This painting is a large museum quality masterpiece of the late 19th century, signed by the artist on the easel to the left, bottom rung:Armand Toussaint Paris.------------------David Killen Gallery believes this was exhibited at the Wadsworth Atheneum sometime earlier in the 20th century, according to information on the internet which indicates that it was loaned to an Atheneum Exhibition from a private collection. It was definitely auctioned by Sothebys New York, May 24th,1995 in their Belle Epoque sale(lot 267)(anyone interested in the details of this sale, we can email the information from Artnet).------------------------------------------------------Anyone concerned or curious if the paintng we are selling is the same painting that was sold in 1995 at Sothebys, you can rest your fears. The back of the painting has two marks bearing the numbers 267, which was the lot number of the work at the Sotheby sale in 1995.-------------------------------------------------The painting has been in a private collection for the last 25 years.Copies have been produced on decals, posters and full copies on canvas have been made by museums and private companies because of the commercial appeal of this iconic image. This work is on panel(wood).Although we will know the exact dimensions Monday when we take the painting down from the wall of the gallery and measure and photograph the back, the approximately measurements from the front are painting: 40 inches by 32 inches and frame: 50 inches by 58 inches(see below more exact measurements when taken down and measured from the back).-----------------------David's notes: generally remarkable condition considering the age of over 130 years. There is a beautiful wood brace on the back(photos have now been uploaded). All wood boards warp, expand, shrink and bend over time from exposure to heat, moisture and the air, and it is my belief that the wood brace was put on the back because of a crack or split that occurred sometime after the work was painted, probably in the mid 20th century. When you look at the painting from the front, you don't see anything, but from the side, with the light catching it at just the right point, you see a faint line, about half way down the painting going from left to right, and it my guess that that was a split or crack from 75 years ago, that was restored and the wood brace was applied to the back to prevent further warping, cracking or spliting.-----------------------Update 02/03/2020:We took the painting down today and photographed it from the back.We clearly saw and photographed old splilts in the wood panel, going across the lower middle of the painting. We photographed the old splits and uploaded them to the photos on the left. This explains the beautiful wood brace made for the back.-----------------------------From the back the measurements of the wood panel (painting only)are 41 inches by 32 inches.------------We uploaded a photo of the line, which we would describe as faintly visible if you are standing almost with your face against the painting, looking to the left side.It is the photo with the two fingers pointing to the line.Standing in front of the painting, the line is not visible.
