MAGNASCO, ALESSANDRO (1667 - 1749)Landscapes by night. ?Pair of paintings, oil on metal. ?Inscribed on the reverse: Alessandro Magnasco 1667 - 1749. ?12.2 x 21.2 cm. ? ?Provenance: Swiss private collection. ? ?Alessandro Magnasco, born in Genoa in 1667, was a painter and draftsman of the late Italian Baroque who created most of his artistic work in Milan. He gained fame through his paintings with melodramatic scenes, for which he mostly used stormy landscapes, ruins or monasteries in the background. Above all he used the clerical population as motifs which included monks and beggars that were represented within a broad, sometimes very dark range of topics. His works are particularly characterized by the use of earthy tones and the eccentric shape of the figures shown, which give the paintings a dark and expressive mood. Bekanntheit erlangte er durch seine Werke mit melodramatischen Szenen, für deren Hintergrund er meist stürmische Landschaften, Ruinen oder Kl?ster heranzog.
