WINCK, THOMAS CHRISTIAN (1738 - 1797)Orpheus and Eurydice / Neptune and Amphitrite. ?Pair of paintings, oil on metal. ?19 x 23.5 cm. ? ?Provenance: Swiss private collection. ? ?The German painter, fresco artist and etcher Thomas Christian Winck was an important representative of the late Rococo. Growing up in Eichstatt as the son of a prince-bishop's corporal, he first visited a local painter's workshop. After that he went to Augsburg, where he probably attended the Imperial City Academy in Fuggerstadt - the most important art center in German area during the 18th century. From 1765 he worked as a history painter in Munich for the Electoral Court Opera Theater. Shortly afterwards, in 1769, he was appointed electoral court painter and was therefor charged several church commissions within the Bavarian electorate. His oeuvre includes a large number of frescoes in Upper Bavarian churches and castles as well as an extensive repertoire of oil paintings. Aufgewachsen in Eichst?tt als Sohn eines fürstbisch?flichen Korporals besuchte er zun?chst eine heimische Malerwerkstatt. Anschliessend ging er nach Augsburg, wo er vermutlich die Reichsst?dtische Akademie in Fuggerstadt - das zur Zeit des 18. Jahrhunderts bedeutendste Kunstzentrum im deutschsprachigen Raum - besuchte. Ab 1765 war er als Historienmaler in München für das kurfürstliche Hofoperntheater t?tig. Kurz darauf, im Jahr 1769, folgte die Ernennung zum kurfürstlichen Hofmaler, in Folge dessen ihm zahlreiche kirchliche Auftr?ge innerhalb des bayerischen Kurfüstentums zugetragen wurden.
