AGASSE, JACQUES-LAURANT (1767 - 1849)Forested landscape with a brown horse. ?Oil on canvas. ?30.5 x 35.5 cm. ? ?Provenance: ?- Sister of the artist ?- Auction Gallery Fischer, 18-21 May 1938, Lot 2077 ?- Swiss private collection, purchased at the above auction for 1.288 ? ?Exhibition: ?- Exposition Agasse Musée d'Art et d'Histoire in Geneva. ? ?The animal and landscape painter Jacques-Laurent Agasse, born in Geneva in 1767, was a famous Swiss artist and is considered one of the most important representatives of the Geneva School in the turn of the 18th / 19th century. He gained fame through his animal representations. Especially dog and horse motifs were very popular, but later also his illustrations of exotic wild animals which he observed in the menageries during his time in London from 1800 became the distinguishing characteristic of Agasse's painting. Jahrhunderts. Bekanntheit erlangte er durch seine belebten Tierdarstellungen. Vor allem Hunde- und Pferdemotive erfreuten sich grosser Beliebtheit, wobei sp?ter auch seine Ausführungen von exotischen Wildtieren, die er in den Menagerien w?hrend seiner Zeit in London ab 1800 beobachtete, zum Erkennungsmerkmal von Agasses Malerei wurden.
