A pair of Japanese ink drawings on paper depicting Kanzan and JittokuIn giltwood frames. overall 64 x 39 (162.5 x 99cm)Provenance: Property from Private Beverly Hills Collection, curated by Hendrix Allardyce.Footnote: This pair of drawings represents two Chinese figures often featured in Japanese ink paintings associated with Zen Buddhism. Kanzan (Chinese: Hanshan) was a hermit poet of the Tang dynasty (618-906) who befriended Jittoku (Chinese: Shide), an orphan who was taken in by monks as a kitchen helper at a mountain temple. They both lived on leftover food from the temples kitchen. They are recognizable by their disheveled appearances. Their carfree lifestyle and hapless nature reflected the Buddhist tennants of charity and simplicity.
