This sumptuous silk robe has been radiocarbon datedto between 1441 and 1615 CE.
Within the pearl roundel, centered in the square woven badge, a pair of confronted phoenix soar, majestic tail feathers sweeping through swirling clouds. The slender gold-wrapped threads of the badge stand out against a background of rich slate blue silk. This delicate fabric is intricately woven with a pattern of small flower blossoms and scrolling foliage, which shimmers in the shifting light. This robe may possibly have been worn by someone from a Steppe culture, who attended the Chinese court.
