Description Arthur Litts (1878-1968). Oil on canvas-laid board titled "Laguna Beach, California," depicting a lovely beach scene. Signed and dated 1939 along the lower left. Further signed and titled along the verso. Arthur Whitebear Litts was one of the foremost Native American artists of the early 20th century. He grew up along the US-Canada border as a member of the Iroquois Nation. He originally did not plan to be an artist, and received his degree in law from a correspondence course. He eventually moved across the country to California, where he began to paint. His paintings depict the beauty of early 20th century California, particularly the lovely beaches, as in this painting, and striking scenes of the Sierra Nevadas.
