This artist was a member of the Indian Space movement which included the artists Steve Wheeler, Howard Daum, Robert Barrell, Will Barnet, Peter Busa, Gertrude Barrer, Ruth Lewin, and Oscar Collier.
Gertrude Barrer is frequently recognized as one of the most influential early abstract woman artists. She studied with Will Barnet at the Art Students League in New York, and quickly became involved in the up-and-coming abstract movements. She was an early Abstract Expressionist, and, with her artistic contemporaries Steve Wheeler and Peter Busa, was an important artist in the Indian Space movement. She exhibited with the SPIRAL association throughout the 1950s and 1960s. Along with creating art, she was co-founder and editor of "Iconograph," a significant avant-garde arts publication.
