Central Thailand, 12th century. Copper alloy. Wooden Base.An early Thai, Lopburi Period (c. 1150 A.D.) bronze Buddha statue, with strong Khmer influences and exhibiting rich antique patination. The Khmer empire ruled a vast domain that reached from what is now southern Vietnam to Yunan, China and from Vietnam westward to the Bay of Bengal. This bronze Buddha stands on a rectangular wooden base. Very much of the Khmer style, this sculpture reveals the enormous stylistic influence they exhibited over their regional subject kingdoms.
