Late 18th c. Profuse applied gilt. Buddha and encircling disciples.A Thai c. 18th?century archaized depiction of the Emaciated or Starving Buddha, with profuse applied lacquer gilding. Gautama Buddha is modeled seated with his legs underneath him on a raised plinth, with his disciples encircled below him in relief. Impressively sized. During his quest for Enlightenment, Gautama Buddha starved himself for six years, eating just a few sesame seeds a day. Buddha eventually declared that the ascetic extreme should be avoided, and instead advocated the Middle Path. Total approx. weight 7.5 pounds.
