Rare early 20th century tribal artifact with good luck symbol. This is a rare antique Native American Navajo blanket rug, produced c. 1910 with a prominent central traditional tribal Whirling Logs design. A striking red background is accent by green and other naturalistic colors, with four stylized arrow fletching symbolizing the four winds blowing them away. In Navajo art, the Whirling or Falling Logs were associated with the four directions and the four winds. It was a motif of good luck that dated to ancient Mesopotamia and was also frequently depicted in Buddhist and Hindu imagery. Its resemblance to the Swastika, which became a political symbol in Europe during the 1930s, caused Navajo artists to cease employing it in their art and in the craft trades. Issued: c. 1910 Dimensions: 22"L X 20.5"W Country of Origin: United States Provenance: Collection of Mona Brown
