Description A set of 2 Chinese painted fans with fitting fan covers. One fan features gold foil slats, with a landscape scene on both sides, both with an inscription and one seal, the reverse features a signature. The cover is decorated with scholar’s items and pink tourmaline toggles. The other fan features archaic characters on the slats with a calligraphy with a signature and seal with a landscape on the reverse with a poem and a seal. The cover features a Buddhist cross and flower motif. Dimensions are: the largest fan measures 11 1/2 in. tall X 17 in. wide; 29.2 cm tall X 43.2 cm wide. All measurements are approximate.
Condition Report Both fan covers are torn at the bottom. The fan cover with scholar's items has significant wear and some areas of loose threads and loss. The fan with the calligraphy and the painting on silk has 1 broken slat, and the paper of the calligraphy is worn along the creases with some breakage and 1 area of loss.
Provenance From a collector in the Northwest US. Her parents accumulated the collection while living in Shanghai from the 1930s to 1950s and in Hong Kong and Taiwan in the 1950s and 1960s.
