Anton Burger was born in 1824, in Frankfurt, Germany. From 1842 to 1846, he studied at the Stì_del Art Institute. At the urging of his teacher Philipp Veit, Anton left for Munich, but returned to Frankfurt, two years later. In 1853, he undertook a study trip to Paris, where he met Camille Corot and Gustave Courbet. Together with Jakob Fì_rchtegott Dielmann, Anton founded the Kronberg painters' colony in 1861. Anton primarily painted landscapes but some of his work also includes portraits, genre paintings and etchings. Highly respected, Anton Burger was appreciatively named the 'King of Kronberg.' His works were sought after, even abroad, and he was honored with numerous awards during his lifetime. Anton Burger died in 1905, in Germany.
