19th C. Carved Chinese Jade and hardwood table Screen of finely carved jade with a rounds happed disc, having round wooden knob surmounted to the pierced center. The surface decorated in relief of auspicious archaic motifs. Framed with carved hardwood in compromising relief. Jade displays moist milky appearance and is a creme-white color with sporadic golden-russet inclusions and some calcifications.

Dimension: 17-1/2"H x 14-1/8"W.

LOT NOTES:

Bi (Pi) disk, carved jade disc with a hole in the center, used for ritualistic or emblematic purposes. The earliest examples are undecorated and date from the Neolithic age (10,000 BC onward), while later examples become more highly decorated. Although not known for sure, they are assumed to represent symbols of the sun or of heaven.
