1st century BC-1st century AD. A carved limestone head with slanting lentoid scooped eyes, reserved vertical nose and vestigial crescent mouth; mounted on a wooden stand. 3.1 kg total, 26cm including stand (10 1/4"). From an old North Country collection; found by a dog walker in the Lincolnshire Wolds in 1965. The eyes and nose have a phallic shape which may be emblematic of a fertility deity. Fine condition.
