Description The deep rounded sides receding to a low foot rim painted in the round on the exterior with a thousand of blossoming flowers, geometrical patterns at the base and rim. The interior of the cup is equally impressive, depicting the profusion of butterflies. Ca. Meiji period, late 19th Century. Size 3 1/2 X 2 3/8. Provenance: Collection of Edward Hyers Clayton (1886-1946). American writer and missioner. E.H. Clayton and his wife were missionaries of the American Baptist Foreign Mission Society in charge of Wayland Academy, a missionary school in Hangzhou, China from 1912 to 1942. E.H. Clayton wrote a book Heaven Below based on his living experience in China.
