Notes Historical Note: Robert Hamilton was listed as a merchant along with James King in 1793 with the leasing of a warehouse on Prince St. He formed a new partnership with James Hamilton in 1796. In 1797 Robert Hamilton was accused of arming privateers. Verso with transfers to John Taylor Sept. 20th, 1796 and Robert Beverly Jan. 4th, 1803. The Bank of Alexandria was established by an Act of the Virginia legislature in 1792, and George Washington supported the institution as a depositor and stockholder. He owned twenty-five shares, valued at $200.00 each. At the time the Bank of Alexandria was established, it was the first bank in Virginia and the second in the United States south of Philadelphia.
