Description Carl von Hassler (German, 1887-1969) stone lithographs. The lithographs include: a landscape scene, probably Tesuque, New Mexico with signature in left corner and a landscape scene focusing on a church building, probably Chimayo, New Mexico. Both are framed with UV glass. Dimensions: sight size-11 1/4 inches tall X 15 1/2 wide; 28.6 cm tall X 39.4 cm wide. Frame-17 1/4 inches tall X 22 inches wide; 43.8 cm tall X 55.9 cm wide. All measurements are approximate.
Condition Report Slight damage to the frames, but the lithographs themselves show no noted damage.
Provenance From a collection in Northern Virginia. These lithographs were acquired directly from von Hassler for an overdue bar bill at the hotel where her husband was the general manager.
Artist Biography: Carl von Hassler (1887-1969), born in Bremen Germany and attended the German Naval academy starting at age 14, he was able to take art courses there and help achieve his dream of becoming an artist. When he was 16 he saw Buffalo Bill's Wild West show and vowed to move to America, which he did in 1912 where he studied in NY with members of the Ashcan Group. In 1917 von Hassler joined the US Army to fight against his home country in WWI. After the war in 1922 he moved to New Mexico and settled in Albuquerque where he became fluent in the Navajo language and painted Native Americans and the surrounding pueblos.
