Artist Biography: Federico Aguilar Alcuaz (1932-2011) Filipino artist who was conferred the title of National Artist for Visual Arts, Painting, Sculpture and Mixed Media in 2009. In 1955 he left Manila for Madrid with a scholarship to The Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando. In 1956 he moved to Barcelona to further his career as an artist. He became a member of the La Punalada Group, whose members included the artists Tàpies, Cuixart and Tharrats, and experimented with abstraction. Alcuaz’s works are included in the collection of some 20 museums and institutions, including the Museum of Contemporary Art in Barcelona, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Madrid, the Gulbenkian Foundation Museum of London, the Museum of Modern Art of Warsaw, the Museum of Modern Art of Krakow, and the Philips Cultural Museum of the Netherlands.
