Description An Indonesian (Java) Vairochana Buddha in 13th century Majapahit style. ?? This splendid Buddha is seated on a large double-lotus pedestal, itself on a square??pedestal??in the cross-legged yogic, adamantine posture of vajraparyankasana, the right leg over the left, with the soles of both feet facing upward. His robe is draped to leave the right shoulder bare, and a portion of the garment that covers the left wrist falls behind the figure. The lower hem of the robe comes all the way down so that the undercloth or skirt is completely covered. The Buddha's raised right and left hands make the teaching or expository gesture (vitarkamudra). This combination is one assigned to Vairochana, a transcendent Buddha that plays an important role in early Esoteric Buddhism and provides the basis for the tentative identification of this figure. The Buddha is backed??by a circular aureole with a beaded border and flaming rim, topped by a finial. He also has a third eye or urna on his forehead??symbolizing the ability of Buddha to see past our mundane universe of suffering.?? Vairocana??is a celestial??Buddha??who is often interpreted, in texts such as the Avatamsaka Sutra, as the dharmak??ya??of the historical Gautama Buddha. Within the Five Tathagatas of Mahayana and Vajrayana??Buddhism, Vairocana is at the centre and is considered a Primordial Buddha.?
