Description United States,1811-1879
Miniature impressionist painting depicting three ladies and two gentleman seated beneath a tree enjoying a picnic. Bingham is most well known as a frontier painter and for his painting "The Jolly Flatboatmen," painting classical scenes of boatmen bringing cargo to the west. We attribute the painting to Bingham as we have no provenance other than the consignor who purchased it eight years ago in 2012 for $4,000 from a local Massachusetts auction. The painting is of a fine quality equivalent to the artist's hand.
