GAVIN JAY, 1972 - PRESENT, THREE-DIMENSIONAL SHADOW BOX
'The General (A Distant Place)', signed and framed.
(29cm x 23cm x 5cm)
N.B. influenced by Artists such as Max Ernst and Joseph Cornell and taking in Pop Art, Victoriana, The Occult, Toy Theatres and anatomical models, Gavin brings a unique approach to his surrealist collages. Vintage images are printed onto card, cut out by hand and built up in layers with balsa wood to make three-dimensional shadow boxes, these are then housed in vintage frames scoured from his home town of Brighton to make work that is both nostalgic and quietly disturbing, conjuring scenes from impossible narratives that exist suspended in Lynchian dream spaces
