Frederick D. Shanhart (1895-1953)
Frederick D. Shanhart, was from Irondequoit, New York. There, he attended college and found love and passion for oriental arts.
After graduating in 1896, he took on various companies where he eventually landed in a company that took him overseas to Japan. He took this opportunity to explore more in-depth about oriental arts, but unfortunately, it did not fulfill his desire. Two years later, he was handed another opportunity to work in China. Mr. Shanhart challenged this opportunity and left Japan. Soon, he arrived in China for the first time in 1915 and worked there for 16 years. The experiences he had were mindboggling because he eventually found the origin of oriental antiques and arts. During those years, Mr. Shanhart learned about Chinese culture tremendously where it led to his immense collection of Chinese antiques.
In 1931 Frederick D. Shanhart moved back to New York. After retirement, he finally had time to collect additional antiques and Chinese arts. He wanted to go back to China, but it was very impractical during that era. Therefore, he created an oriental garden with a Chinese pagoda and occasionally invite guests to have tea in it. “My grandfather’s home was full of antiques and Chinese arts along with an oriental garden, it looked like an art gallery”.
In 1949 Frederick D. Shanhart eventually passed away from stroke complications where it ended his significant accomplishments.
