Two wood figures of a pair of Ni?. 18th/19th centuryBoth standing astride with a bare muscular chest adorned with jewellery, wearing a knee-long skirt, and surrounded by a billowing shawl, the hair tied into a chignon, the hands in a gesture of fending off, Kong? Rikishi (aka Naraen Kong?) with an open mouth calling out the syllable ah (agy?) and holding a long vajra, the other, Misshaku Rikishi, with lips pressed together humming the syllable hum (ungy?) and holding a club. Each standing on a flat base. Remains of a white gesso undercoating and traces of pigment. (2)The "Two Kings" (Ni?), aka Kong? Rikishi, in the fierce posture of warding off an unseen enemy are Buddhist temple guardians placed behind a wooden fence in the enclosures to both sides of the main temple gate. To the worshippers and pilgrims they symbolise good health and physical strength. In the Edo period they were especially worshipped by postal couriers who offered their worn sandals by tying them to the fence. Height 115.6 cmProvenancePrivate collection, Southern Germany Zwei Ni?. Jh.Beide mit muskul?sem Oberk?rper, der mit Ketten geschmückt ist, einem knielangen, faltenreichen Hüfttuch und langen um den K?rper wehendem Schalband, die Haare zu einem Knoten auf dem Kopf zusammengebunden. Beide halten eine Hand abwehrend und mit gespreizten Fingern. Links: Kong? Rikishi (auch Naraen Kong?) ruft mit ge?ffnetem Mund die Bannsilbe ?Ah“ (agy?) und h?lt einen langen Donnerkeil (vajra), rechts Misshaku Rikishi summt mit geschlossenem Mund die Bannsilbe ?Hum“ (ungy?) und h?lt eine Keule. Reste von wei?er Grundierung und Spuren von Farbe. Auf flacher Standfl?che. (2)Die fast immer überlebensgro? dargestellten Zwei K?nige (Ni?), auch Kong? Rikishi genannt, halten mit furchterregenden und abwehrenden Geb?rden zu beiden Seiten eines buddhistischen Tempeleingangs Wache. Durch ein Gitter sind sie in den Nischen vor dem Zugriff der Besucher geschützt.
