A Rare Large Japanese Blue & White Seto Stoneware Dish - Meiji Period. Seto dishes decorated exclusively in underglaze cobalt blue are rarely seen and do not seem to feature in reference books either in the West or in Japan. The decoration is of a riverside scene featuring a house, tree and mountains in the distance. It is coated in a finely-crackled glaze. The dish has 8 spur marks on the interior, these wares having been fired in stacks. The underside is simply decorated with two basic flower scroll designs. Diameter 31 cm (12.25 inches). Second half 19th Century.
Provenance: from the collection of the late Brian Page (1938-2018), the well-known Oriental art and antiques dealer from Brighton.
