A very fine and important antique Chinese porcelain charger of the Wanli period, circa 1680 to 1700. Decorated in four shades of blue on a white porcelain ground, depicting pairs of birds among rocks, flowers and insects. The charger measures 23.75" wide, and is in near perfect condition. No cracks, breaks, chips or repairs of any kind. When examined under a high-power lens, the glaze has the appearance of snowflakes, indicating the fire was fueled with wood and ash and fired over a long period of time, as would be typical of the period. The charger has small pad marks on the bottom, where it sat on risers in the kiln during the firing process. This charger was in an important London collection from 1868 until 2015, again, in excellent condition and of museum quality.
