THE PORCELAIN 18TH CENTURY, THE MOUNTS CIRCA 1765, IN THE MANNER OF JEAN-CLAUDE CHAMBELLAN DUPLESSIS The baluster vase with masks issuing twisted handles and surmounted by a gadrooned rim, on an acanthus-cast chanelled circular base with scroll feet 12 ? in. (31 cm.) high; 9 in. (23 cm.) wide
Of rare blue crackled glaze and with an unusual and boldly scrolling base mount, this superb vase relates closely to the oeuvre of the celebrated dessinateur and fondeur-ciseleur Jean-Claude Chambellan Duplessis, père (d. 1774), chiefly known for his work as a modeller at the Sèvres porcelain factory, where he developed various characteristic designs firmly associated to him thus enabling further attributions. Documented bronzes by him are extremely rare: among the best known examples are the mounts for the Bureau du Roi of Louis XV and a mounted Sèvres vase of flowers on shaped base given by the Dauphine Maria-Josèphe to her father Augustus III, King of Saxony in 1749 (Serge Gauthier, Les Porcelaines du XVIIIe Siècle Fran?ais, 1964, p. 169).
The present four-sided base mount consists of deeply scrolling supports consisting of multiple mouldings headed by a spreading foliate motif. This ambitious and sturdy base mount appears on a number of large-scale Chinese porcelain vases, bowls and ewers invariably associated with Duplessis, including a garniture of seven large Chinses blue porcelain vases and ewers in the collection of the princes Esterhazy at Schloss Eisenstadt, which were reputedly a gift from Madame de Pompadour (M. Kopp, Schloss Esterhazy, June, 2014, p. 47); a pair of Chinese blue porcelain ewers, sold Christie’s New York, 20 April 2007, lot 156 ($120.000); a Chinese blue porcelain and famille verte porcelain ewer, sold Christie’s London, 6 July 2016, lot 67 (£96,100).
