CIRCA 1756-70, THE MOVEMENT BY CAUSARD, THE CASE POSSIBLY BY RENE DUBOIS The waisted case headed by a domed pediment centered with a profile medallion above a circular enameled dial with Roman chapters signed 'CAUSARD Hgr DU ROY'/SUIVt. LA COUR', surrounded with an entwined trailing husk border above a stork drinking from an urn framed within ribbon-tied palm branches, within a fluted border terminating in greek key, the sides with with pierced quatrefoil grills flanked by masks and rosettes, on later paw feet 31 ? in. (81 cm.) high; 21 ? in. (54.5 cm.) wide; 7 ? in. (18.5 cm.) deep
The striking ‘go?t grec’ design of this clock, with bold Greek key supports, relates to the preparatory drawing numbered 61 in the Recueil de desseins - Modèles de pendules, now at the bibliothèque Jacques Doucet, Paris. Its large ormolu encadrements are also relating to those mounted on pieces of furniture with vernis decoration by René Dubois, André-Louis Gilbert or Léonard Boudin. The present clock was probably intended to be placed on a desk or bas d'armoire decorated en suite.
