AN ITALIAN ROCK CRYSTAL PILGRIM BOTTLE ITALY, 20TH CENTURY In the Renaissance style, on oval foot enamelled in black, blue and red with foliage and cartouches, the body cut with a mythological scene, with lion mask and enamelled ring handles, the detachable baluster finial with chain, marked underneath and in cover 10 5/8 in. (27 cm.) high
The scene depicts the musical duel between Pan, Greek god of shepherds and nature and Apollo, god of music, held in front of Mount Tmolus, a judge with two followers including King Midas. Pan played a wild tune causing the animals to hop, the trees to sway as if dancing and the fauns to laugh aloud for joy. Midas declared Pan's the sweetest music in the world. When Apollo played his lyre all was still; wild creatures, trees, the earth and the air were all silent until Apollo's music stopped, and all but Midas proclaimed Apollo the winner. Midas alone would not admit that the music was better than Pan's, therefore Apollo proclaimed 'If thine ears are so dull, mortal,
they shall take the shape that best suits them', those of a donkey.
