FLORENCE, SECOND HALF 19TH CENTURY The cabinet surmounted by a hardstone balustrade gallery, the entablature centred with a figure of Minerva flanked by four smaller statues of Muses, the pediment inset with a plaque of fruiting vine above a breakfront frieze set with specimen marble cabochons and hexagons, the central door altar-like embellishment with putto and white rose pietre dure plaque above a central drawer and flanked by lapis lazuli columns enclosing a burr-walnut lined and mirror-backed compartment with cabochon-set fretwork apron and short drawer, four secret key-holes opening the flanking facade drawers, which are fronted with rectangular pietre dure plaques of birds and flowers surrounded by oval micromosaic plaques of butterflies, flowers, birds, and a mandolin, the front corners with red marble columns, the stand with panelled freize set with four micromosaic roundels depicting the Temple of Vespasian and Titus, Tomb of Cecilia Metella, Temple of Sybil, and Lucano Bridge, with fall-front writing drawer fit with secret drawer and flanked by slides, on four square tapering legs panelled in walnut and terminating in ball feet, a secret compartment accessible to the reverse of the pediment superstruction inscribed 'G Castagnole / Flonno 1872 / Firenze [?]' 78 ? in.
