秣菟羅 貴霜王朝 約二世紀 紅砂岩太陽神還願像The sun god squats in his celestial chariot pulled by four horses. He wields a mace and a dagger, iconography used to depict Surya in Kushana sculpture. A sculpture of the deity in the Government Museum, Mathura shows him with the same pose and implements (Sharma, The Splendour of Mathura Art & Museum, New Delhi, 1994, pl.XIII). The stele's na?ve carving is characteristic of Kushana Mathuran votive images. Compare, for example, one of Lakshmi also in the Government Museum, Mathura (ibid., p.112, fig.37).ProvenanceSotheby's, New York, 20 March 1997, lot 273The Estate of Benjamin M. Rice II, New York
