Biography from Sullivan Goss - An American Gallery (Artists R-Z)
James Paul Brown has a palette which recalls the French fauvists of the 1930s. The bright colors and energetic brushwork Brown uses express his eclectic spirit. Naturally, Brown seeks out kindred spirits as his models and subjects. "Brown takes today's heroes from the worlds of entertainment and sports and transposes each likeness to a canvas of vibrant energy," wrote James Reed, curator of the Riverside Art Museum in California. Reed continued:
"He fuses the powerful dappled brushstrokes of the Impressionists and the unique colorfield work of the Fauves with [the] contemporary iconography [of Pop artists such as Andy Warhol], setting these invigorating figures in an environment that borders on psychedelic frenzy."
Some of the most recognizable of Brown's models include an array of celebrities. Among the singers, musicians, and actors are Louis Armstrong, James Dean, Marilyn Monroe, Ray Charles, David Bowie, and Michael Jackson. Some of the sports stars include boxer Mike Tyson, Brazilian soccer player Pele and America''s Cup winner Dennis Connor. Brown also painted some of the athletes competing in the 1984 Olympics, including the challenging model track star Carl Lewis. Brown's painting now hangs in Lewis'' living room. The paintings and bronze sculptures that were created for the Olympics were displayed at the Frederick R. Weisman Museum of Art.
Brown has enjoyed a long tenure as the official artist of the New York Philharmonic, and he has worked extensively with the Bolshoi Ballet Company, the Ballanchine Ballet Company, the Russian State Ballet, and the Cannes Film Festival. He has painted portraits of past U.S. Presidents Reagan, Bush and Clinton, and he was commissioned by the U.S. State Department to paint a portrait of Pope John Paul II during the Pope's visit to the United States.
Brown has also painted many portraits of his most important muse: his beautiful wife, Juliet. In his paintings, she has taken many forms including a mermaid, Ophelia, an etheral spirit, and simply herself. These intimate works exemplify Brown's romantic outlook on life and his ability to find beauty in all of his surroundings.
Brown''s playful and exuberant works are a visual translation of his passionate feelings for art and the world at large.
