The Dutch Folly Fort embraced a garrison, a governor's house, and several other buildings. It was located a short distance down river from the foreign hongs at Canton. The British flag is seen flying from the ramparts, suggesting this painting dates from the period when British troops occupied Canton in 1847. An engraving of the same site is illustrated in H. Colburn, Narrative of the Voyages and Services of the Nemesis, from 1840 to 1843, London 1844, facing p.384.
