Description MORRISON, HEDDA HAMMER (1908-1991) [China. The Forbidden City], 1930s, likely printed 1930s. Group of twelve vintage gelatin silver prints, each on a thin card mount, images 4 3/8 x 6 1/8 inches (110 x 155 mm) or the reverse, signed (l.r.) and titled (l.l.) in pencil. Housed in a custom card case of Chinese design.
Some toning/oxidation from the mounting adhesive at one edge of the image, minor creasing to mounts, wear to the case. Overall the images and mounts clean;
Together with a group of approximately 16 small-format images, these also apparently by Morison. Some versos with notations in her hand (a few with notations in another hand).
Images of the Summer Palace, the Forbidden City, the Temple of Heaven etc. The greatest holding of these images in the US is at the Harvard-Yenching Library, which holds some 5,000 photographs and 10,000 negatives taken by Morrison while resident in Beijing from 1933 to 1946.
