FRENCH SCHOOL (Mid 20th century) "Le vote ne change rien. La lutte continue" (The Vote Changes Nothing, The Struggle Continues) Silkscreen poster. Sheet: 33 1/2 x 27 1/2 inches; Frame: 35 1/4 x 29 inches. Unsigned. CONDITION: In overall good condition, was note examined out of the frame due to the fragility of the paper. Creasing, folds and wear throughout due to the utilitarian nature of the poster. The whole poster is in tact, discoloration throughout from age. Notes: This poster is from the May 1968 movement in France when there were a series of student occupation protests against capitalism, consumerism, American imperialist and traditional institutions. There were mass strikes throughout France with 11 million workers eventually striking, approximately 22% of the total population of France at the time. The movement lasted 7 weeks and ended as quickly as it started with workers gaining significant wage increases and the dissolution of the National Assembly and the call for Parliamentary elections. According Alain Geismar (one of the leaders of the time) the movement succeeded "as a social revolution, not as a political one."
