Carved wood polychrome Phra Songachai, also known as "The Laughing Buddha", Thailand, early 20th century. Legend tells that Songachai loved to teach the Buddhist dharma but he was so attractive that women and men alike became so infatuated with him they could not listen to his words, so he transformed himself into an unattractive monk and thus was able to impart the teachings of the Buddha. He is seated in half lotus position with both hands holding his copious belly, a symbol of prosperity and abundance. Size: 18'' x 10.75'' x 7.5'' (46 x 27 x 19 cm).
